By appointment only. If nobody picks up, please leave a message: the answering machine is always on and we call back as soon as we can.
Finding us
We're on the east access road beside 71 Highway in Grandview. GPS does better with our name, "Burge Bird Services", than with the street address.
- Take 71 Highway to the 140th Street exit. Heading south, turn left at the first light to cross over the highway, then left at the next light onto the east access road. Heading north, the exit puts you on the access road: go straight through the light. Either way, we're the first building on your right.
- Look for a big white two-story house with an addition out front, and our sign that says BURGE BIRD SERVICES with a parrot on it.
- Use the driveway off the access road that leads to the front door. That's the clinic entrance. The lot behind the building is for staff.
- Construction around the Grandview Triangle can be confusing. Call us and we'll talk you in.

Dr. Julie Burge, DVM
Dr. Burge became interested in bird medicine while living in upstate New York, where no veterinarian in the area would treat birds. She began adopting unwanted birds, came home to Kansas City, and started Burge Bird Services in 1990. Her practice has treated birds exclusively ever since.
She has worked disaster response for animals since helping birds rescued after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and she still has a few good stories about birds attacking the doctor.
- B.A. in Biology, University of Missouri, 1983
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, University of Missouri, 1987
- Missouri representative, Association of Avian Veterinarians
- Has lectured at the AAV conference on disaster response and animal rescue
Burge Bird Rescue
Our nonprofit 501(c)(3) rescue takes in more than 300 companion birds a year and finds them new homes. Some arrive needing medical or surgical care their owners couldn't pay for. Adoptable birds live in the Rescue Room, built onto the hospital in 2012 with a Pepsi Refresh grant that bird lovers voted for. We give preference to our clients, and consider adopters anywhere in Missouri or Kansas who will drive to us and pass the application and interview.
- Always call for an appointment before coming to see the birds.
- Save your bird's molted feathers. We sell them to fund the rescue, and red and yellow sell best.
- Volunteers aged 14 and up help with cleaning, playing with birds and odd jobs.
